Having a career working with horses isn’t limited to riding show jumpers or training racehorses. Many people choose to study Equine Science at colleges and universities. Some of the posts here on Horse Lover’s Math are based on their research. To see these posts, check out the Horse Science category.
One organization of equine scientists, the International Society for Equitation Science, held their 9th annual conference July 17-20, 2013 at the University of Delaware and University of Pennsylvania.
1. In what year was the first conference held?
The theme of that year’s conference was ‘Embracing Science to Enhance Equine Welfare and Horse-Human Interactions’.
Some of the questions and subjects discussed at the conference were:
- Does the human voice have a calming effect on horses?
- Creating a survey to assess sportsmanship in horse show participants.
- Do horses benefit from provision of shade in hot, sunny weather, and do they prefer it?
If you were creating the survey to assess sportsmanship, what questions would you ask? How might you display the data?
If you could research any issue or question you wanted, what would it be?
