To start this section off, kids will work through three categories of costs: boarding, health, and tack and equipment. Once they’re done, they’ll have a realistic estimate for how much it costs to own a horse. Next they’ll learn about horses’ water requirements. How much do horses need to drink each day? How does exercise and heat affect a horse’s water requirements? They’ll learn a simple math formula to determine when it’s too hot to ride and they’ll learn how to test a horse for dehydration.
They’ll be put in charge of a ten horse barn. How much hay will they feed each day by weight? How many bales will they go through each day? How many bales will they need to order to see their horses through the fall and winter and how much will that cost? Once the hay order arrives, how much room will they need to store it? Lastly they’ll learn some basic hay bale stacking patterns to stack hay safely.
