Shetland ponies Fivla and Vitamin model handmade wool sweaters knitted by local Shetlander Doreen Brown at the Thorndale Shetland Driving Centre in the Shetland Islands of Scotland.
The white pony Fivla, is a calm, loving 17-year-old who is very good friends with 18-year-old Vitamin, the black pony.
To make the sweaters, caretakers Frances Taylor and Jo Tonkinson took measurements; the length from neck to back and the girth. Here are their results.
The length of the ponies, from what would be the sweater’s collar to the hem was 38 inches.
All the way around the widest part of the belly was 76 inches.
From the centre of the pony’s back to the cuff, the arm length, was 36 inches.
1. Express the collar to hem measurement as a fraction of the belly measurement.
2. Express the arm length measurement in feet and yards.
They passed this information on to Doreen. Doreen had to make her own pattern. She worked from a photograph and drew the shape on graph paper.
She then had to calculate how many stitches and rows to one inch. Special adjustments were needed to shape around the neck and leave a gap for the pony’s mane to hang out and also add an opening for the leg, all of which was worked out from the graph.
She used over one kilogram of wool for each sweater.
3. How many kilograms of wool did Doreen use to make both sweaters?
4. 1 kilogram equals 2.2 lbs. How many pounds of wool did Doreen use for two sweaters?
One sweater took 4 days to make.
5. How many days would it take to make 4 sweaters?
