The 2012 Supreme Extreme Mustang Makeover Yearling competition was held September 13 to 15, at the Will Rogers Equestrian Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Exhibitors in this category had to be 8 to 18 years old at the time of application.
Once each youth picks up their horse, they have 90 days to train them. Yearling horses are too young to be ridden and so competitors in this category compete in hand only, riding at any point during the competition is not permitted. In hand means the exhibitors remain standing and lead and direct the horse from the ground.
Each youth and their mustang performs in three classes; Compulsory Maneuvers, Pattern and Leading Trail. Three judges score the competition with each class worth a possible 40 points per judge. The judges class scores are added together for the final total score for each class.
1. What is the maximum number of points a competitor could score in a class?
2. Imagine you compete in Mustang Makeover and score 95 points in Compulsory Maneuvers, 101.5 points in Pattern and 110 points in Leading Trail. What is your final score?
The Top Twenty (20) Mustangs with the highest combined scores for all three classes return for a freestyle finals performance. These top 20 exhibitors choose musical scores, costumes and props that permit them to show the athletic abilities of their horses in a crowd appealing way.
Prize money is distributed to the top 20 finalists. The Champion receives $15,000; 2nd $9,000; 3rd $7,000; 4th $5,000; 5th $2,500; 6th $2,000; 7th $1,750; 8th $1,500; 9th $1,250; 10th $1,000; 11th $750; 12th $650; 13th $550; 14th $450; 15th $350; 16-20th $250.
