The Eastern Montana Appaloosa Horse Club is organizing the Montana Equine Soccer League. The league is for all age groups, all levels of riding ability and all levels of horses. Laurel Saddle Club (LSC) will host the first event the morning of April 20 at the club grounds at the time shown on the 24-hour clock to the right:
The event is an introduction to equine soccer and is free of charge to all participants.
1. If you were to go, what time does the event start? Include am or pm in your answer.
Equine soccer, also called horse football or Hoofball, is played with an “equine-sized” ball on horseback (or mule back or donkey back). Both western and English riding styles and tack may be used to play. The ball is listed as being 40″.
2. Judging by the size of the horse and ball in the picture below, does this measurement refer to the circumference or diameter of the ball?
According to America’s Equine Soccer League, a 60′ x 100′ size arena or larger works best as the footing is good enough to safely allow equines to walk/trot/canter.
3. What is the perimeter of an arena this size?
4. What is the area of a 60′ x 100′ foot arena?
Goals are placed at each end of the arena and marked with colourful cones or barrels.
For more experienced players the goals are placed 12 feet apart. For less experienced players they are can be positioned up to 25′ apart.
5. Imagine you are setting up an arena for a game of equine soccer. You want the goal to be perfectly positioned in the centre of a 60′ x 100′ arena. How far from each wall would you place the cones if the goal is 12′ wide?
The number of horse/rider players can vary depending on how many people want to play. It can be anywhere from one against one to eight players to a side.
A game consists of two halves that can be either 10 minutes or 15 minutes in duration. A short break is taken between halves to rest, water and discuss strategy with team mates.
6. How long would a game last if you played 15 minute halves with a 10 minute halftime rest?
Would you like to watch some equine soccer?

Answer: diameter
3. What is the perimeter of an arena this size?
Answer: 60 + 60 + 100 + 100 = 320. The perimeter is 320 feet.
OR: (2 x 60) + (2 x 100) = 320.
4. What is the area of a 60′ x 100′ foot arena?

5. Imagine you are setting up an arena for a game of equine soccer. You want the goal to be perfectly positioned in the centre of of a 60′ x 100′ arena. How far from each wall would you place the cones if the goal is 12′ wide?
Answer: Step 1 – 60 – 12 = 48
Step 2 – 48 ÷ 2 = 24. The goals would be placed 24 feet from each wall.
6. How long would a game last if you played 15 minute halves with a 10 minute halftime rest?
Answer: 15 + 15 + 10 = 40. The game would last 40 minutes.
