Imagine you want to build a new pasture on your farm for your horses. The first step is to measure out the section you want to fence.
One sunny day a friend comes by to help and the two of you measure the dimensions for the new field as shown below.
1. Calculate the perimeter of the field you want to fence.
Of course, next you’ll have to make decisions about what type of fencing you want, how much of it you will need to cover the distance around the perimeter of the field and how much it will all cost. More math for another day!
Step 1: 35 m 63 cm + 52 m 45 cm + 27 m + 60 metres 14 cm = 174 m 122 cm
Step 2: 122 cm = 1m 22 cm
Step 3: 174 m + 1 m 22cm = 175 m 22 cm.
The perimeter of the new pasture is 175 m 22 cm.

I want to make sure that I set up my horse pasture nicely. It makes sense that I would want to ensure that I get a good fence for it, too! I’ll have to do some math to see how big my area is.
